Two Mile Eligibility
Two Mile Distance
NEISD offers free school bus transportation to all eligible students who live two miles or more from their home campus. The distance a student lives from their home campus is measured using the shortest route traveled on publicly maintained roads between the nearest property line of the school and the nearest property line of the student's legal residence, based on Texas state guidelines. Elementary students may be required to walk up to 1/4 of a mile to a bus stop. Secondary students up to 1/2 of a mile to a bus stop.
Magnet Programs
Students who participate in vocational programs or classes not offered at their home campus are provided a shuttle service to the magnet campus. For more information about the Dual Language program, read Dual Language Parent Letter /Spanish. For more information about the Pre K program, read Pre K Parent Letter /Spanish.
Special Needs
Special Needs students are eligible for transportation services if a need is established through the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee. If the committee determines the need for services, a route request must be approved. For more information, read Special Needs Parameters /Spanish.
Hazardous Transportation
Students residing within two miles of their home school may have transportation available if their neighborhood qualifies as hazardous under the district's hazardous transportation rating system, as stipulated and applied in accordance with state and local policy. A hazardous condition exists where no walkway is provided and students must walk along or cross a major traffic artery, an industrial or commercial area, or another comparable condition.

Student Conduct
A school bus is an extension of the classroom and transportation is a privilege for all eligible students. Proper behavior and conduct are expected while waiting, riding, or departing the bus.
Read School Bus Standards of Safety and Conduct in your Student and Parent Handbook.
"Bullying" is unacceptable and will not be tolerated at any time in order to maintain proper order for safe operations of the bus.
Read about Bully Awareness and how you can help.

Bus Safety Tips
1. Arrive early
Parents are encouraged to help students arrive at their designated bus stop five minutes before scheduled pick-up time. Make sure your child is standing on the sidewalk or back from the roadway at least six (6) feet while waiting for the bus.
2. Form a line
When the bus approaches, students should form a line and be prepared to load immediately in an orderly manner.
3. Do not stop bus
If your student is late to the bus stop, do not attempt to stop the bus. Never run after the bus as it pulls away from the bus stop.
4. Have documents ready
Students must get on/off the bus at their designated bus stop. To get on/off at a different bus stop, students must have a signed note from a parent/guardian and school administrator. The note must be given to the driver when boarding the bus.
5. Do not chase bus
Make sure your child immediately moves away after getting off of the bus. Chasing or hanging onto the bus at any time is prohibited.
6. Never walk behind a bus
Your child should never walk behind the bus. When walking in front of the bus, make sure your child stays ten (10) feet ahead and avoids bending down in front of the bus for any reason. -
Special Needs Transportation
The NEISD Special Needs Transportation Office strives to make sure your student's trip to and from school and home is pleasurable and safe. Read the Special Needs Parameters, in Spanish.
-
Special Needs Transportation is determined by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to ensure students receive appropriate and fair services based on federal, state, and local stipulations.
-
Students receiving Special Needs Transportation will be given a yellow door hanger at their household with printed bus stop information.
-
The pick-up and drop-off sequence and times depend on the student's proximity to their school or program and medical needs of students assigned to the route.
-
Parents/guardians/caregivers are responsible for meeting the bus to transfer custody of the student before and after school.
- Routes are designed for a bus ride to be less than 60 minutes. Our goal is to provide a safe, economical and courteous service.
