Clubs, Groups, and Extracurricular Competitions
Learning continues outside the classroom at SETA. Through extracurricular activities that are built around student passions and our advanced curriculum, students are able to explore their interests, build their skills, and connect with classmates. By offering specialized clubs, the educational experience at our magnet school program is enhanced, so our students are ready to excel.
Academic UIL
UIL provides the most comprehensive program of academic competition in the nation, with Academics offering more activities than any other UIL division, with 30 contests at the high school level and 20 A+ Academic contests for grades 2-8. Over 500,000 students participate in UIL academic contests each year.
These activities, which exist to complement the academic curriculum, motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, challenge them to confront important issues, while providing them with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively, exhibiting much more than knowledge and comprehension.
American Rocketry Challenge
The American Rocketry Challenge is the world’s largest rocket contest with nearly 5,000 students nationwide competing each year. The contest gives middle and high school students the opportunity to solve engineering problems by designing, building and launching model rockets.
Chess Club
The Krueger Middle School Chess club participates in events, tournaments, and has weekly meet-ups for practices and competitions. As an open club, anyone is welcome to attend.CyberPatriots
CyberPatriots is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air & Space Forces Association to inspire students toward careers in cybersecurity or STEM industries. Critical to our nation's future, the core of the program is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, the nation's largest cyber defense competition that places both middle and high school students in charge of securing virtual networks.
FIRST Robotics Competition
The FIRST Robotics Competition combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited time and resources, students in teams are challenged to raise funds, design a team brand, perform teamwork skills, and build & program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against competitors. With volunteer professional mentors lending their time and talents to guide each team, it’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get.
FIRST Tech Challenge
FIRST Tech Challenge consists of teams of students from 7th - 12th grade that are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Guided by adult coaches and mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and working as a team.
SA Smart Mayor’s Challenge
Students from grades 6-12 team up as they research a San Antonio smart city problem and propose a strategy, product, or service as a solution. Students select and research a problem related to the competition topic. Research typically includes STEM topics, and possibly entrepreneurship, civics, policy and other topics. Using a provided template, students share research results and make a recommendation using a pitch template.Student Spaceflight Experiment Program
Designed as a model U.S. national STEM education initiative, the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) was launched to give students the ability to design and propose real microgravity experiments to fly in low Earth orbit. Experiments are performed in a “weightless” environment. Since 2012, SSEP has conducted operations on the International Space Station (ISS), America’s newest National Laboratory.
Technology Student Association
TSA is a national student organization of 300,000+ members, offering a broad program of activities that includes exciting opportunities for networking, competition, and leadership development. Engagement in over 70 STEM-based competitions allows students to address different interests such as architecture, communications, engineering, leadership, and technology research. Besides competitions, intracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, and community service are additionally available.
