Librarian

  • The Library Book Club met monthly to promote reading and library programming. Students worked on promoting mystery books to the entire campus. In addition to required monthly meetings during the school day, the twelve members met weekly before school to work on posters highlighting popular mystery books.
  • Each 9 weeks the librarian created and shared a school wide book promotion. The first promotion was the 20 Book Challenge. 15 students participated and received a free book for their efforts. The second was the Mystery Genre Challenge. The spring challenge was “Don’t Judge a Book by its Movie”and the last promotion focuses on poetry.
  • Poet Laureate of San Antonio, Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson, with the help of the librarian, conducted two writing workshops for Garner students. Every student who participated shared a piece of their writing. They received validation of their voice and themselves as writers.
  • 8th grade ELAR students visited the library and participated in three learning stations to extend their background knowledge of the Holocaust. One station was a virtual Google Lit trip where students had the opportunity to visit present day Auschwitz. The second station was a Reader’s Theatre where students learned vocabulary and performed a play about a hero in the Holocaust. Finally, students learned first hand accounts of deportation experiences, and life in the concentration camps.

Teacher

  • Along with the Reading Acceleration teachers, the librarian presented a lesson on symbolism and vocabulary using the picture book, "Memoir of a Tortoise". Students discussed and shared examples of point of view, memoir and anecdotes.
  • The librarian researched local legends and folktales and shared a Google slide deck with 6th grade ELAR teachers. The slide deck included local newspaper articles, websites and audio recordings along with a TEKS based assignment for students to complete. Students worked on the assignment in the library then presented their findings in a gallery walk in the classroom.
  • The librarian presented a lesson on resource credibility to AVID students. Together we watched a video and analyzed it for credible, reliable facts. Then students used the same given criteria and analyzed a website with a partner.
  • The librarian, along with an 8th grade social studies teacher and ITS, co taught an interactive lesson on the first 15 US presidents. The librarian assisted in designing the lesson, instructing students on how to use library databases, and correctly citing sources. After creating their project, students used Canva to record videos and share their learning.

Lesson Spotlight

In January all Garner math classes visited the library to celebrate Hour of Code. Organized in stations, students chose between low-tech options such as Gravity and Laser Maze. Students worked in teams and successfully used logic to outsmart the game. Other choices included using knowledge of mathematical concepts like angles, estimating and shapes to code various hand held robots.

Collaborator

  • The ITS and Librarian collaborated on providing a TechKNOW Tuesday club to all students. Students from every grade level were recruited and meetings are held monthly. Students learn and practice 3D printing, VR, and Green screen.
  • Middle School Librarians met several times throughout the year to set goals and collaborate on faculty training. Librarians share ideas for successful professional developments they provide throughout the year.
  • The Librarian along with the Family Engagement Committee held a Family Night where parents were encouraged to attend to learn about the new STAAR 2.0 and their individual student’s scores. A presentation on the dangers of vaping was also shared. Parents signed up to participate in a Parent Book Club hosted by the librarian. We are reading the book New Kid by Jerry Craft.
  • Working with an art teacher and PTA, the librarian initiated the idea of a mural for a large wall in the library. Working together through the design and funding process, the mural will represent the joy of reading and each genre available in the library.

Collaboration Spotlight

As part of the Library Services Guiding Coalition I met several times this year with other secondary librarians and revised the district mission and vision statement. Members of the Guiding Coalition served as models on their collaborative teams. We presented our work and promoted the PLC process to other secondary librarians at a district sponsored professional development.

Campus Leader

  • In support of a campus wide initiative to bring the campus rating to a B, the librarian organized AVID and honor roll students to provide tutoring, 3 times a week, in reading and math. This promotes the library as a place for academic endeavors and encourages a focus on academics.
  • The librarian shared a “Garner Library in Review” newsletter with staff promoting library activities such as book fair, lessons, programming and checkout statistics every 9 weeks. Regularly the librarian received positive comments from teachers and programming suggestions based on the newsletter.
  • ITS, Chad Belford, and the librarian, hosted a professional development opportunity for science teachers. After discussing the academic needs of their students, the librarian and ITS put together a learning menu of library and technology resources so that teachers could better teach graphing skills to their students.
  • The librarian shared Learning Express with members of the Instructional Leadership team in an effort to improve school wide STAAR test scores. Practice tests, flashcards, study guides were highlighted. Instructional leaders then shared this information at their department meetings.
