On May 8, 2023, the Board of Trustees approved the adoption of the Choosing the Best program for instruction in Human Sexuality and Abstinence Education (HSAE) and Abuse/Violence Prevention for middle school and high school.  However, the approval was contingent upon edits made under the direction of the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) with approval by the Board of Trustees.

On June 12, 2023,  the NEISD Board of Trustees approved all edits and instructional materials for the high school HSAE and abuse/violence prevention curriculum to be implemented in all high school health credit courses beginning in the fall of 2023.

    MATURATION

NEISD adopted and utilizes a one-hour video-based Elementary Maturation lesson facilitated by the school nurse. The program discusses the changes both boys and girls experience during puberty and adolescence.  Two in-person Parent Preview Meetings will be offered.  More information about the meetings and at-home preview window will be sent to parents/guardians of 4th and 5th grade students prior to student class dates. Parents/guardians may view program materials through Skyward Family Access (https://portal.neisd.net/hsae) or in person by scheduling an appointment at their student’s campus anytime during regular business hours.

    ABUSE PREVENTION

This curriculum is still under review by the SHAC per the January 2022 Board resolution. Before the SHAC can make any recommendations to the Board for adoption of the curriculum, it must host two public meetings on the curriculum materials. For updates on the curriculum review process, please visit the SHAC website at www.neisd.net/shac.
