Mrs. Jennifer Perelstein

I am excited to be starting my seventh year as the Nimitz Choir Director.  I have a degree in Music Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio.  I was particularly honored to be voted Teacher of the Year for our district in 2023, and was the 2024 Teacher of the Year for Region 20 in Texas.  I also received the KENS 5 Excel Award for Excellence in Teaching.  Prior to Nimitz, I was an Art Teacher at The San Antonio Country Day Montessori School.  While there, I published "Who Moved The Masterpieces," a book highlighting works from the general collection of the McNay Museum in San Antonio. I also served as a board member for a community theatre in New Braunfels for 7 years where I occasionally perform in productions.  As you can see, I believe in all the arts as a form of self-expression.

Additionally, I have a degree in Communications and Journalism from Texas State University in San Marcos.  I spent 9 years in television; recruiting, hiring and coaching news, sports and weather broadcasters across the United States.

I work very hard to give the choir students at Nimitz unique performance experiences.  We have sung at movie premiers, in caves, at professional sporting events, at elementary schools and of course, at various events around our campus and as far away at Houston.  No one in the city of San Antonio does what we do.  Our choirs consistently receive superior ratings at UIL events and are privileged to work with clinicians monthly.

However, my favorite position has been being the mother of our son, Dakota, who is a middle school band director (and an Eagle Scout!) and wife to David, who oversees testing data for a school district. Our entire family is committed to educating the next generation.

I love playing with Olive (my terrier), science fiction books and movies, building book nooks, playing the piano, and any music by Claude Debussy or The Band CAMINO.
